How the United States Navy Serves Our Country

The United States Navy is a leading force when it comes to the protection of our country. With 337,517,000 active and 102,003 personnel, the U.S. Navy is the world’s largest in terms of manpower. Learn more about this service branch of the United States Armed Forces in this blog! 

The United States Navy was founded on October 13, 1775 in Philadelphia, PA. George Washington was considered the father of the Navy. The Navy was actually disbanded after the Revolutionary War, but brought back mainly to protect against pirates. 

The Navy fleet includes 288 battle force ships, 10 aircraft carriers, nine amphibious assault ships, 22 cruisers, 62 destroyers, 17 frigates, 72 submarines and 3,700 aircraft.. The Navy won the largest maritime battle in history. The Battle of Leyte Gulf took place during World War II, and was the largest naval clash ever in terms of ship tonnage. Six presidents served in the Navy during World War II.

The current roles of the Navy include civilian leadership in the Department of the Navy, shore establishment, and operating forces. They provide security at sea and prevent conflict, while protecting international partnerships. The Navy is also able to operate any kind of military equipment in the U.S. arsenal. 

Navy reservists have similar responsibilities as Active Duty personnel. They provide expertise, experience and leadership. They are also in charge of global operations and planning. Their duties range from a wide variety of tasks from medical services to Navy base renovation. There are 3,077 reserved currently mobilized, and hundreds of Navy Reserves in the United States.
